B-Pillar Cracked While Raising Top!

After resolving a bunch of engine problems with our 97 Boxster, we took it out for the first time with the top down.

When we parked and attempted to raise the top, there were cracking noises and the top jammed against the back of the rollbars. At first we found the left side plastic rod-end in the convertible mechanism cracked, and upon closer review realized that the left side B-pillar had cracked between its lower two pivots.

Has anybody ever heard of such a thing? Could any kind of sensor failure lead to such an event?

When the top is repaired this car will be for sale. Just spent $3K for new VVT solenoid, new ignition coils, and brand new Hankook tires (super quiet).
