speedo not working

hi all, my speedo has packed up and been told that i need a new one, can a buy a second hand one and connect it straight in or do they need coding in? i have looked through previous threads and it looks a straight forward job, i have also been told that it runs of the ecu so just a bit concrened as to what might happen
