Instant-G

Does anyone have any info about their exhaust system? I did a search for this topic and only came up with a couple threads in which it was briefly mentioned, both of them positive. I'm just curious as to whether anyone has verified the claim of an extra 32 hp out of the 3.2 Boxster S engine with their exhaust mod.

Highly dubious and decidedly unsubstantiated claim..................

lol...like Jeff said 32 hp from an exhaust swap is completely unheard of and wishful thinking.

Boxtaboy 01-28-2010 05:56 AM

LOL. 32hp from just changing the exhaust? That is a funny one. If that's the case, everyone can just forego spending the extra $10k in buying the S, and just get this exhaust, and have the same power. They would probably sell more exhausts if they just claimed a slight increase like 8hp...something not really measureable, even though it probably loses power.

I could see it being possible.

Over on the Boxster Spec Racing boards I believe it was Bill Pickering who dynoed a ton of exhaust and was able to pull out +15hp from one set that replaced the muffler only on a 2.5L. Many of the other ones gave out much less.

Forum Member Randall I pulled +10hp from Che's headers no?

I would think it's possible, does anyone have any dyno graphs to prove their gains though?

Boxster44 01-28-2010 08:29 AM

I believe Bill's nearly free flow exhausts were painfully loud. He has documented the 15hp gain in a certain rpm range. I don't think anybody would want those exhausts on the street however - it's almost like no exhaust at all.

I got caught in a gaggle of SpecBoxsters at Thunderhill during practice session and I just had to slow down and let them pass (they would have anyway) - I couldn't hear anything but BLAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH. Get a group of them together and you can't even hear yourself think.

32 HP? I think it actually makes your wallet 32 lbs lighter.

"32 HP? I think it actually makes your wallet 32 lbs lighter" :D

When you look for the fine print it usually says: muffler, cat back pipes, headers / sport cats, cold air intake and Chip programming. You add all that stuff up and I think 32 lbs sound about right.

For me it is more about sound. I am one of those louder is better people. On my old 930 Turbo the exhaust was so loud, my wife told me she could hear me 1/2 mile away ;) I loved it.

I spoke with the owner of Instant-G awhile back concerning his exhaust systems. Needless to say, he had some interesting thoughts to share regarding his exhaust upgrades for the boxster. Unfortunately, the diameter of his system is proprietary, and, therefore it is not compatible with either oem or after market components. In any case, claiming a gain of 32 hp solely from an exhaust upgrade is a bit ridiculous.

From just the exhaust, no way. I've seen the Instant-G stuff, and it certainly looks different than anything else. Good or bad I don't know, but it's certainly different.

my ears could last forever. Now I'm a bit older and wished I'd turned the volume down.

Instant-G Stainless Boxster 3.2/3.4 Headers.
The stock Boxster uses 1-3/8" tubing. The Boxster "S" exhaust is a joke and actually necks down to less than a square inch before the catalyst.. Porsche had to figure out some way to get rid of 32 HP!
Here's the deal.

The 996 makes 300 HP at 3.4 ltrs. 88 HP per liter.
The Boxster "S" makes 250 HP at 3.2 ltr. 78 HP per liter.
It doesn't take a rocket scientist to show that if you can get 996 power out of a Boxster "S" you'd gain 32 HP.
Now the kicker - these headers with no change to the cat or muffler same dimensions but built for a 996 make 318-320 HP with no mods to the DME. (94 HP/liter)
That means that you should be able to get 300 HP out of a Boxster "S".

It ain't rocket science. Well, maybe the headers are but the logic isn't!

NOTE: We sell this as a complete solution, from header through cat and INCLUDING muffler and your choice of tips. Porsche uses 1-5/8" tubing as primaries, we use 2-1/4. That is 80% more crossectional area.

When I spoke with the gentleman, he indicated that his exhaust components use larger diameter size flanges, piping and joinery through out. In addition, the design of the merge collector and the length of the primaries on his headers were altogether different from any oem or aftermarket system. Therefore, his headers, cats and cat back muffler will not "tie" into either the factory system or an aftermarket one that has the same size diameter as the oem.

Boxtaboy 01-31-2010 04:31 AM

If it is the complete exhaust running from the headers all the way to the mufflers, I can see how there could be an improvement. Whether or not it's 32hp, who knows. I thought they were claiming 32 just from a cat back muffler.

Johnny Danger 01-31-2010 04:57 AM

I have never seen primaries of this length or a merge collector of this design, along with piping of this diameter, to include "olive" joints, used in conjunction with a 986 exhaust.

Me too, but I prefer loud motorcycles to loud cars. Here's my Triumph triple with D&D cans. Don't forget your rubbers (earplugs) ... Tom

The collectors are just plain ugly... and cheap.

Here's how they should look like (from a 997):
