Daylight Running Light Hack

I was reading a thread about how you can jump fuse 6 with fuse 9 and control your daytime lights by the ignition switch. Where can these fuses be found? My number 6 fuse is showing heated seats. I am in the fuse box by left leg on drivers side. Am i in the wrong fuse box? Any help would be appreciated.

Hello :)

This should do the trick: link

It's the only fuse box in the car, as I'm aware of :)

Best regards
Kim

Awesome!!! Thank you

No problem :)

Is it an easy hack?

Kim

I did this before I installed LED running lights and it is extremely easy, it won't take more than 5 minutes.

The hack works great but it turns the headlights on all the way. I would be afraid I would forget to turn on my tail lights once it got dark. I was hoping it would make light the headlights the same way they are when you turn on the parking lights, very dim but running. I am going to experiment with it today when it warms up.

Rick, share the LED hack with us.

DRL Hack - Porsche Boxster Forums: Porsche Boxster Forum

thstone 05-25-2012 09:19 AM

I wired the DRL hack to use the front fog lights for daytime running lights instead of the low beams. The fogs are perfect for use during the day and then the low and high beams work as normal.

The hack involves a single jumper wire between the Fog light relay and the Fog light fuse. The fog lights will go on/off with the ignition switch and are switched off when the high beam headlights go on.

Required Materials:

(10) inches of 16 gauge insulated wire

(2) Fuse taps, Radio Shack P/N 270-1204

(2) Female Quick Disconnectors, Radio Shack P/N 64-3131

Procedure:

1. Strip the wire ends and crimp on the quick disconnects.

2. Plug in a fuse tap to each of the quick disconnects.

3. Locate the fog light relay in the panel above the fuse panel. It is #12, the far left relay in the second row from the bottom.

4. Attach one of the fuse taps to pin 86 of the relay. Bend the tap to conform to the bottom of the relay. Use a piece of electrical tape to hold the wire to the side of the relay.

5. Return the relay to position #12 and run the other end of the wire to the top of the fuse panel.

6. Remove the fog light fuse, 25 Amp, #7 (top row, 4th position from the right) from the fuse panel. Slip the fuse tap on the wire end to the upper leg of the fuse.

7. Return the fuse with the tap up into position #7.

That's it. Easy as pie.

I"m new to the 986 forum and I am running a slightly modified 2000 986. My question concerns adding LED DLRs to the front grill area (which I can do easily) and use these for DRL instead of any headlight options.
Can I connect the side marker lamps, and the LED grill DRL together, and use the hack listed above with the fog lamps? Actually, my goal would be to only use the grill LEDs as DRLs, but I'm open to anything that I can control from the cockpit. Any ideas?

If you do the hack so that the fogs are DRLs, I recommend you use led bulbs in the fogs. Halogen bulbs get pretty hot and can burn the light covers.

I'm considering doing the DRL hack but would rather use the parking lights than the low beams (I recently purchased new eBay headlights with LED parking lights). I noticed that fuse 3 and 4 on Row A are for "Side lights, right" and "Side lights, left" so I was thinking of connecting fuse 6 (Seat Heating) to fuse 3 and 4 instead of fuse 9. However, doing so would in essence bridge fuse 3 and 4, therefore I'm wondering if this hack be safe or if it could create a shortcut?

Note: I understand that the taillights and side markers would always stay on with this hack but I'm ok with that.

Any help would be appreciated. Thx.

I did the hack for the fog lights and got some CREA H7 LEDs from ebay.
It works great and was very easy to do
