Weird noise from engine

I bought a -99 2.5l boxster a few weeks ago, and loving it. However, I noticed today that with the engine idling, i hear a small "krr-krr-krr" noise coming from the engine. What could this possibly be, just normal, or something that could get expensive?Got a bit scared to hear this, after reading horror stories on the forum about engine failures.

Driving a 10 year old car

with an unknown number of kilometers on it, it could be anything or nothing.

Suggest pulling the access hatch behind the seats off and seeing if you can locate the sound. Then the access hatch under the top storage.

Try to locate it and figure out when it occurs (while the car is moving, while the clutch is depressed, only while turning right, etc).

Then re-post as we'll have more clues then.

While it's hard to go off a textual description of that sound, power steering pumps do tend to make a growling sound. You could try checking the fluid level, but you'll have to get the top engine cover off etc. And if you are going to do all that, another 15 minutes will get the front engine cover off (behind the seats). You can then use a mechanics stethoscope, or a few feet of hose held up to your ear and pointed at the various pulleys to help identify the sound.

Keep in mind, these aren't Hondas, they aren't going to idle silently.
