Drive train question: AWD?
 

Earlier today I was looking at some of the new 997C4s and C4Ss... and a thought struck me. "How hard/is it possible to convert the boxster RWD to an AWD using C4/Turbo parts?"

With so many knowledgeable people on this forum, and those who know more about Porsches than I will probably ever learn in my lifetime (Jake, Pedro, etc.) I pose these questions to you.

1. Is it possible to convert a boxster from RWD to AWD?

2. How much would it cost if possible?

3. Would you ever convert your Boxster to AWD if you had the opportunity to?

4. If porsche offered a new boxster or cayman with AWD would you opt to buy the AWD model over the RWD model, and why?


I feel that sometimes I think and daydream more than I should......... :cheers:

A while back I was talking to a friend with a 996 Cab, and she said my front trunk was HUGE compared to hers. I had a look, and she was quite right...hers was only half as deep as my 986's. And then it hit me...she had a C4.
Putting front transaxle into the Box would take some real craftwork.

I thought 996s had a spare tire mounted horizontally on the bottom of the trunk, thus less space.
+1 on alot of work in converthing though. The biggest challenge will probably be on the engine/transmission facing the other way around side. Im sure somebody with more knowledge will chip in.
Most boxster owners who drive their cars year-aroud like me will probably like the idea, but I think it will defeat the purpose of our cars being light and simple drivers' cars.
Kinda like a turbo vs gt3 thing.

Anything can be done with enough $$$. It would have to be a total "1 off" fabrication, it would add 400lbs or so and increase parasitic drag. Picking out a nice used C4S would be a lot better performance for less money.

Your car would be a 911 with no rear seats and a lot of waisted space. The engine would have to be rear mounted. It would just be a awd 911. Waste of time and money.

Nothing wrong with that, it's how great ideas come to light. In this case though, it would be impossible without completely revising the Boxster into a rear engined freak of nature. Practically speaking, not worth the effort unless you really want a Boxster bodied Carrera 4. Very few mid engined AWD cars that I can recall, Lambo Gallardo, Ford RS200 come to mind but not much else.
