Sporadic oil light at warmed up idle, then a check engine light
My car flashes the oil light when idling, engine is warm. When it is cold it doesn't, due to the higher rpms.
What is the rpm for idle, warm engine. I checked the oil level, it's fine. I disconnected the battery to get rid of the check engine light, and it hasn't returned, but the oil light still pops on occasionally. Yes, I searched. Any ideas? Thanks! |
Yeah, disconnecting the battery without bothering to find out what the codes were was a really bad idea..................

Well your going to have to take it to a mechanic, the CEL could have toldyou the possible issue and weather not its something that can harm your engine or if its a sensor or bad lead to a sensor.
|
Okay, well hopefully the cel will come back on, then I'll take it in.
thanks! |
In addition to what specific readings the CEL is going to tell you, low oil pressure warning light illumination is usually caused by:
Oil grade too thin. Worn engine bearings. Worn oil pump. Faulty oil sender unit. Idle revs too low (should be approx 800rpm) If you have low oil pressure @ normal 800rpm, there is a good chance that you have low oil pressure at all revs. The only real way to check is to hook up a mechanical oil pressure gauge to the engine to verify the correct pressures at running temps and revs. I wouldn't dismiss this potential problem out of hand, although an oil change with the correct viscosity oil is a good starting point. And check the oil filter internals for debris..... |
