Catalytic Converter Official Weight

It has been discussed on this forum numerous times, and with much debate, the real weight saving in installing secondary cat delete pipes. I finally brought my cats home from work after the fitting of my delete pipes, and I put them on the scales.

The combined weight of the left and right is 9.3kg (20.5lb).

This should settle the debate once and for all.

Well.... you need to figure in the weight addition of the cat delete pipes too I'd imagine.

It goes without saying.

A fair estimate of the pipes is perhaps 5lb in total, therefore about a 15lb saving to stock.

Not huge I must admit, but every bit counts.

If you are interested in shedding more weight then I will give you the diet my better half has had me on for the last 2 months, it has been good for a 35lb saving, just as good as the bypass pipes and removing the spare put together!

Dang i took my cats off also and they feel alot more than 20 pounds! there is extra piping i might have on there that you dont have thoe. I'm thinking 30 lbs...

Yeah same here, I wonder what year cats he weighed & if they are the same as U.S.

Good Job! thanks for taking the time to do this. I have the front headers and CATS in my attic. Does anybody want to know what they weigh? I can throw'em on the scales. any guess's?

I will try and photograph them and put up the pics for viewing.

The emission control systems are different with Australian delivered cars. Mine only has one set of cats as standard, what you guys are referring to as your secondary cats, and there are no cats in my headers. Also I only have one set of oxygen sensors, upstream of the cats, so removing them has no risk of creating CEL codes.

As for the weight, I am assuming that the cats are the same though. I must admit that before weighing them I actually thought they were heavier than the scales read.

All the same though, every bit counts.

I wonder if the cell count is the same as U.S. (800 I believe) sounds like you don't have a O2 thread bung either. I bet your cats are the same as 1996-1999
