lubrication spray for convertible top?
 

i was watching motorweek and they mentioned its a good idea to occasionally use a lubrication spray for the friction points for the top. does anyone have a recommendation for this?

I haven't really looked for 'friction points' on the convertible top, and don't think I will right at the moment (It's dark out!). But my guess is that something like this...

...might be a good choice. People use it, for example, on bicycle chains (instead of oil or even things like WD40, which can be a little messy and hold dirt). This stuff lubricates with a wax, stays dry.

It does come out wet initially, so I'd take steps to avoid getting it on the fabric of the top itself.

Actually, I'm not sure I agree with the motorweek guys.

The factory repair manual specifically warns against using any kind of grease or lubricant on any of the seals or teflon bushings.

The only place where lubrication is recommended, and the only time it is recommended, is when assembling the top and then only to apply a touch of assembly grease to the pins securing the various bows.

I can see where using a spray lubricant could actually be bad for the joints and increase potential wear.

Actually, I tend to agree. I haven't heard of anyone recommend lubing such areas. But if I was going to, I'd probably use the stuff I mentioned...

thanks guys, you both bring up good points. i ll re evaluate. but thanks for the recommended lubricant. ill try it if i go that route.
