I am a new owner of a 2002 Porsche Boxster in excellent shape. It has average miles on it and as a precautionary measure I am having all synchros replaced as I have a lazy 3rd gear synchro. While repairing the synchros my repair facility stated the clutch disc needed repairing as the "rivets" were starting to show through. As It is 40 miles to my repair facility and figuring it would make sense to have a new clutch assembly installed, I told them to go ahead and install a new clutch kit. After waiting two days they told me my car is not a "domestic" version of the Boxster. As such my clutch parts would have to come from Europe! I was told that if the Boxster is a seal gray, which it is, it was non-domestic. Is this true or are they blowing smoke up my posterior??? This Boxster was initially purchased in Honolulu, Hawaii and then shipped to California when the previous owner was transferred. Carfax and Autocheck support this. Could this in any way have impacted the version of the Boxster I have? I am again thanking you in advance for any assistance you might give. This is by far the most professional and well organized forum I have seen related to Porschephiles!

If your car is a US-market car, it should have the factory-applied, black colored emissions certification label on the underside of the rear trunk lid. It should also have the US safety certification label in the driver's door jamb. I don't know what (if anything) would be different in the clutch of an ROW (rest of world) Boxster anyway...

I think your repair facility just want to make money out of your porche boxster.

Sounds like COMPLETE BS. It's very easy to tell if the car is North American or RoW (Rest of World) spec, and yes, they made Seal Gray cars for both markets.

Given how difficult it is now (really since the early to mid 90s) to import so called "gray market" cars, I would be EXTREMELY surprised if yours was not US spec.

In terms of your clutch, either way, the RoW and US spec cars use the same clutch components, so this is clearly BS.

On a side note, who did you have freshen your gearbox?

Please tell us you didn't take it to aamco Midas or some similar rip off joint. Cfind a dealer or Porsche specialist if u can. I found a Porsche specialist independent mechanic and they do great work, know these cars well, ablnd they are honest and reasonable for pricing. Good luck.

Uh the dealer? Yeah their not overpriced on their parts or labor. :rolleyes: You're half right at least. Best and cheapest way to get the clutch done (other than DIY) is buy an OEM unit online for $300 or so and take it to your friendly Indy Porsche mechanic.
