Need Engine # Decoded
 

Im looking at buying a damaged engine from a guy. Its either a 996/boxter motor with a crack in the variocam case cover (see photos ).

He purchased the engine from a local Porsche Dealer when they were cleaning house. The dealer is Sunset Imports, in Portland Oregon.

The engine number is: M96/ 2365303807 and I am trying to find out what year the engine is, size, and what trim car it came out of if it was a 996, 996tt, c4,c2 or even a 986S.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Depending on my overall findings, it will determine if I buy the engine or not.

Why not call Jeff at Sunset parts (JeffClark@****************************************************.com, (800) 346-0182), he can probably also tell you its history....................

M96/23 - Boxster 2.7L motor
6 - 6 cylinder
5 - engine version
3 - engine year (2003)
03807 - sequential serial number

The M96.23 motor is either an '03 or '04 2.7Ltr. egas engine.

#65303807 indicates that it's an '03 (653) serial # 03897

Where is that number stamped?
 

I need to get the engine serial number as I am ordering parts for an IMS upgrade. Not sure where it is on the case.

Odd engine code identification request
 

I recently got a 2001 boxster that the PO states had a new ROW 'S' motor (I assume 3.2l) installed 10K ago.
The engine code is:
M96/2167Y09654
I've read through some of the helpful posts here, but can't figure out where this one fits due to the included 'Y'.
It's suffering an oil leak on the right side, and I'd like to know as much as I can about the motor before having it diagnosed/repaired.
Can anyone help me understand the engine size, year, and possibly IMS type?

Thanks, Radium King for the information. I was told that the engine was imported and installed 'new' about two years ago. The number seems to indicate that it was instead pulled from an older car. Is that correct?

i *think* so. if it were remanufactured at the factory from used parts then it would have an 'AT' designation. if it were assembled at the factory from new/old parts then the year would be more recent. perhaps it had been sitting unused since 2000?

Do the bolts on the oil pan have the normal 6 sided heads or are they torx bit heads?

As far as I know, if every bolt head you see is an external torx head. Then it's more than likely a factory replacement motor. I'm not sure when the factory switched over to using that style bolt. Your motor won't have any undercoating on it either
