obd2
is there a way to check obd2 codes from the gauge cluster?

No, you need a code reader. These can range from under $50 to almost $300 (durametric, high-end actrons). I use the Actron 9125 which you can find for around $50. It does the job and is compact enough to keep in the car in case you get a CEL while on the road.

You can't go wrong getting an OBD2 code reader, as it works on almost every car made today. However, if you just need the codes read and the CEL cleared, most of the big parts stores such as Advance or Auto Zone will do it for free.
