Exclamation Tip Tranny Question!

Hey Guys, Ive been looking around for this information and nada on my questions. I'm fairly sure of my guesses to my questions to be true (for the most part)

Currently I am building a 3.6 996 engine to drop in my 97 Tip. I am debating either doing a single turbo or sc setup on the 3.6. With a theoretical 500-700hp

( I would be using JE 9:1 pistons, chromolly connecting rods, updated IMS, etc.. )

In reguards to the tip tranny on the 97 986, what is the difference between it and the 996 tip, or the 996 tt tip tranny? Are they pretty much the same with a few upgraded parts that I can easily have it rebuilt for the increased hp.. or would i need to find A 996 OR 996TT ip tranny to swap in?? Im guessing the 986 tip wont hold over 350hp.. and the 996 tip wont be able to handle over 400hp?

When it comes to this tranny issue, Im clueless. :ah:

Cheers,

Adam

986 Tip has a different manufacturer (ZF) than that of the 996 tip (Mercedes for the 996 turbo... and I THINK the 996 too)... the tip in the 986 is the same model as is found in many audi's, vw, and etc... I can get you the tranny info, but I don't have it with me right now...

So... no you can not intermix parts between the three....

HOWEVER your bigger problem is that the 986 tranny is in the different direction than any 996 tip...

My only guess for you is to call up Level10 performance... they do tip tranny upgrades for Audi guys who run massive turbos on tip cars...

My 986 is a tip, and I have a 3.6 in my car... only I know of... but I can tell you that Im still throwing codes in my tranny that I have no idea how to fix... tranny holds the power, but it does scare me... your best bet has to be to do like I am doing... go get a 6-speed from a 986S...

Very helpful, thank you. Now with the 986S 6spd... i know it is a huge undertaking for the conversion, but what would need to be upgraded for the increased power output? I know it will hold up to the 300hp 3.6, but Im building the engine specificaly to turbo or sc it with moderate boost (depending on the setup, 12-20psi) Which will throw the engine into the 450-700hp range, meaning can the 986S 6spd handle that kind of hp and lbs?

I dont know if anyone ever figured out the max the 6spd was good for untill needing to be modified.

Thanks.

the most I know of that tranny holding is mid 450's... but that's the most HP anyone can get in a 986... I don't want to say that 450-700 isn't possible (well definitely the top of that range), especially when you are starting with a 3.6... but why try?

The boxster is a great with a n even better chassis... it could use some more torque, but the last thing it needs is 15 psi of boost. Just a little FYi... in a boxster, you are going to have to do a whole lot upgrading to get where you will be even be able to use any of that power... LSD, entire suspension, and etc... even then its going to be crazy hard to drive... just my 2 cents... my suggestion is get the 3.6 working in your 5.2.2 DME car will be a hard enough task, so start there... let alone rebuilding it the way you want... then worry about the tranny.

if you have any more questions let me know... I've been down this road...
