Control Rods for Top

Can anyone advise if the Large Round Control Rods that atach to the lever on the drive motors and then attach to the pot aluminum levers that move the Clamshell are spring loaded or gas charged. I would like to make mine "move open" more easily as they won't even move at all and they are new. I was thinking if they are gas charged - you could drill a very small hole in the bottom to relieve the pressure. If they are spring loaded - I guess there isn't much you can do. Also if anyone can positively tell me what actually makes the dash light for the top (opened or closed) go out - I would really appreciate it. Thank you for any help. Jerry
