Convertible Top Pushrods

Does anyone know if you can modify the large black round pushrods that attach to the motor drive lever and then attach to the clamshell bracket to make them have less resistance. Are they spring loaded or gas loaded. If they are gas loaded maybe by drilling a very small hole in the bottom will make them move apart more easily instead of constantly breaking the cast aluminum brackets for the clamshell. Thank you very much. Jerry
