Help! What Oil Filter wrench?
Does anyone know where I can buy the Porsche special tool # 9204 ? This is the oil filter cap wrench for our car.
The Boxster oil filter housing is supposed to fit a cap wrench that is 74mm between the flats. I bought a two-step cap wrench that is 74mm and 76mm but it doesn't work right. Actually it doesn't work at all. It slips like crazy. I also bought a special filter wrench that removes only. So now my real issue is tightening the filter back on to the specified 19 ft lbs. With the wrench I have I can't even tighten it to 5 lbs without it slipping. Damn plastic housing may be worn too. The Porsche dealer told me they don't sell tools to customers period. They don't want us working on our cars. Thanks |
Your dealer is full of crap. You can buy an oil filter tool from any dealer and a bunch of sources online (Suncoast, Vertex, etc.)
I got mine from Sunset Imports in Oregon (a Pcar dealership, btw) for a fraction of the price my local stealership's parts counter wanted for it. |
Randall is right, what a load of doodoo.
I'm curious, what wrench removes only? |
I got mine at zdmak tools - http://www.zdmaktools.com/wbstore/main.asp?action=PROD&PROD=M0093B&CTMP=1
works great and I like 2 features it has: 1. It can be tightened to the canister to prevent slipping using the side 12mm bolts. 2. It has either a 3/8" and 19mm hex for using either a box wrench or a socket extension and drive - great for getting a torque wrench on it. $13.95 + $7.00 S/H - $21.95 |
That is the Mercedes version which 2 screws on the side.

I had a feeling the dealer parts counter guy was full of it. Actually he's a really good guy, it's just his dealership has that policy so he doesn't carry any tools for sale for customers at least. I'm not taking my car there anymore anyway. If I have something major there is a great Porsche & exotic car tuner only 4 miles from my house. Checkout TKXperformance.com , a PCA Club racer friend of mine highly recommended them for great honest work at a very fair price. Cheaper than the Porsche dealer. |

That may very well be - I do not dispute what you're saying. But, it works great... at about half the cost. |
I've been using the spring loaded clamp type and it works fine for me. You can work the angles really well and you just flip it over to tighten the filter (see what works for you).

OK, easy & cheap way out, Pepboys Oil filter wrench A251 $3.99.
Works like a charm.... It is 76mm, 14 flute wrench and it works great. I have torqued my filter twice with it. It is in a floor of my garage because I just used it day before yesterday. If you want pics, I can get them for ya tomorrow. |

Napa sells a good quality 76mm 14-flute that doesn't fit at ALL. (I ended up wrapping the filter in blue tape, then tapping the wrench onto the bottom to get it off, so I'm doubtful that the Pep Boys 76 would work. I'll try the 74mm...

I bought one from Pelican Parts. You can tighten it with a socket wrench/torque wrench. Works well.

Automobile Atlanta sells the cap for $15 or the tool for $37 so plus shipping. Just go to the site and search :oil filter wrench" and scroll down the resulting page to see your choices.

I sold my Porsche 09 which is the reason I stopped posting (here and other forums too). Take care :D |
But you came back after all this time to vehemently defend your honor against the naysayer. That's special.

This is the filter wrench I'm using:

OReileys has a 74mm 15 flute. I bought the Napa 14 flute and had to retun it because it did not work.
It has to be 15 flute or it will not fit right. |

There used to be whole story of my car building as a blog on Myspace, but they deleted it 2010 and I didn't get myself to rewrite it. All the pics are on my FB page though (link in sig). |
I bought this at Pep Boys. About $4 and fits perfectly.
