Solution!! Sprung Centered Clutch for a Boxster
as you may or may not know, replacing your flywheel with a solid lightweight option will cause chatter with a factory rigid clutch. generally, for a street car, a person with a solid LWF would want to use a sprung centered clutch disk to alleviate this problem.
in my search for a sprung clutch disk, i came to a realization: nobody makes one!with catman's help, i sent the Aasco flywheel dimensions to Spec Clutch and they will now provide sprung disks as a NO COST option to those of us who purchase their products. to order, first choose which clutch 'stage' you want from jdsperformance.com. then, call david at JD's performance to place your order & specify the sprung centered disk. your clutch will ship from Spec 2-3 days after you place the order (they have to make it). Voila; problem solved. BTW, spec said they may be working on a flywheel for us, too; i'll post more when i find out. spec 'stages' (prices are for disk, pressure plate, release bearing & install tool): stage 1: similar to OEM ($431) stage 2: kevlar w/ hi-torque hub ($503) stage 2+: dual friction w/ hi-torque hub ($575) stage 3: 6-puck semi-metallic w/ hi-torque hub ($539, not very streetable) stage 3+: full faced carbon metallic w/ hi-torque hub ($674) stage 4 is a rigid racing clutch & stage 5 is a rigid drag clutch. also, you can specify a light weight option for another $80 (not sure how much weight this saves). |
They already should have the measurements, they made me one back in November. I dealt with Spec clutch directly.

Thanks for the info. I have been considering a lightweight flywheel for quite a while but didn't want the chatter.
|
Good info, my lightweight flywheel does rattle while in neutral with the clutch out. I only have 10-15K on my current clutch, so it looks like it will be with me for a while....
Ed  |
Mine also chatters a bit (Aasco with Sachs sport clutch (non sprung). It'll be a while for me too.....

Where would one get a light flywheel? I have searched but found no supplier.

Thanks for the link. I will order one today.
How often do you think you will need to replace the fiction surface? And how much is it? Did aasco stop production of these, and if they do, where will you get a friction surface? Thanks, James |
you should replace the friction surface every time you replace the clutch. it's $97.
