Rear End Knock
A few weeks ago I clipped a curb whilst cornering and although there doesn't seem to be any change in handling I have noticed a small knock accosionally at low speed when going over a bump or reversing out of my garage which has a small lip.
I have had a bit of a look under the back of the car but can't see anything obvious. Any idea's? Thanks guys. Hope you all had a great X-Mas & wish you an awsome New Year |
I don't know, but would be interested in any one else's thoughts.

Just a wild guess here, but it could be that you screwed up your wheel bearing. Parts aren't expensive, but the labor and the special tool required for the job aren't cheap.
I wouldn't keep driving the car though... have a mechanic look at it if you can't visually see anything wrong with it. If it's the wheel bearing you should be able to jack it up and hear it when you spin the back wheel. |
Sway bar link? As mentioned, put the rear on a jack and push/pull on things to see what is loose. Wheel bearing, hub, half-shaft, rear subframe are all possibilities. Maybe even a shock/strut bolt/housing?

I went to a new shop today (new to me, anyway, the guy is the 911 tech advisor for the Carolinas chapter of the PCA) to get an estimate for mounting my KW V3 coilovers; he had an 01 S on a lift out back for replacing CV boots. He was talking about a mysterious rear end knock that they finally traced to strut bar bushings.

Wife curbed the rear right getting out of a driveway and ever since there is a obnoxious knock when the right side goes over small bumps, etc. Dealer and Indy looked high and low couldn't locate the source. It may very well be some bushing or a cracked strut.

If you decide to try new swaybar droplinks then I can suggest these guys.
The bushings in mine were worn out which caused a occasional knock when going over bumps so I bought a few pair from them. The price they charge is only slightly higher for a pair than what I found for a single unit when calling around to several places, plus they give free ups shipping which is a plus. |
