DeSnorkeling & MAF Problems?
I DeSnorkeled my Boxster about 8 months ago and it had been running fine. Just this past Friday 11/9/07 the CEL came on and my code reader shows P1128 & P1130 , both of which indicate a MAF problem. Has any one else had MAF problems due to DeSnorkeling? The air filter should be filtering regardless, whether the snorkel is on or off right? What is the expected life of a MAF sensor? My car is 7.5 years old with 39,095 miles on it.

Desnorking shouldn't affect the MAF sensor. I would remove the sensor and clean in with electronics cleaner and reinstall. They can get a film on them or get slightly dirty causing a CEL. A lot of times you can clean them and get a quite a bit more mileage out of them.

My MAF needed replacement around the mileage you have. And that was before I de-snorkeled. Nothing too unusual to me. Evidently they're easy to replace yourself. And having a (non-dealership) shop do it for you isn't ridiculously expensive.

Thank you all for replying. I bot some cleaner and I will see if that works. I have heard that a new MAF costs about $400.
BTW, I also found that another cause of MAF malfunction and damage is from the oil separator bellows hose. Apparently this rubber hose will deteriorate from heat and oil and allow air to enter the intake system. It is a flexible hose that connects the separator to the engine and is located below the oil separator. It is most easily viewed and replaced from below when the car is on a lift. I'm going to check the integrity of this rubber hose too. Probably a good idea to inspected this hose at each oil change to head-off and potential actual MAF damage. |

changing the MAF
I justed received CEL 1128 and went to clean the MAF. I have located it but have a question on removing the wire plug.
Does it just pull out or does it have a clip that has to be pushed out? To be more specific..... the wires( I believe 4) are in a rubber connector that is oval that goes into another connector. Does the oval come out or both? I do not want to start pulling on them until something snaps. Thanks |
MAF is held in by Tamper Proof Torx screws.
BTW desnorkeling your intake does NOT damage your MAF. MAF's break and are finiky too, sometimes you'll get one that lasts years and years and you might get one that breaks several months after installing it. |
I'm complete novice when it comes to DIY and the Porsche. Any photos of cleaning MAFs?

scroll to the bottom of the link and you'll see some photos of its location and the screws and tools you wil need. Just grench that MAF in MAS AIR FLOW cleaner spray and let it air dry and DO NOT blow on to it, that will create a fog on it. Just shake it around to let out any puddles of the cleaner stuck in the sensor and let it air dry for for 5 minutes then reinstall. |
How is your car running?
I had both of those codes (not de-snorkeled) which may or may not mean the MAF is bad, the only way to know for sure is to have it hooked up and tested at your dealer or other shop that has the right hardware to check. I have replaced the MAF, AOS, and cleaned my throttle body. Codes have not reappeared, however, I have found a vacuum leak in one of the rubber sleeves beyond the throttle body which is causing a rough idle and code P0507. Vacuum leaks are common and the cause of many issues related to the normal running of our cars, you may want to have the MAF tested before investing in something that may not be bad. |
My car is running good with an exception of the Secondary Air Injection Error codes i get, ill be working on that late next month.

Removing the MAF
I am looking at the service manual and it states to "release the electrical connector". Can I just remove the torx screw with the connector still on it?

Coonster - The wires connect to a wiring harness that disconnects from the MAF. The MAF itself is removed by unscrewing the the two Torx T-20 screws. These are tamper proof screws and I believe you need a anti-tamper bit. The center of the bit has a dimple that allows it to be fully seated into the screw.
