The 996 3.6 engine is 300hp. The 997 stock engine is: 325hp The engine I quoted above (which is the "S" engine for the 997) is 355hp. My parts guy at Carlson laughed when I asked him the price for the new 3.8 engine..LOL

Thanks. Just for my education, which models carry the 3.8L - TT/GT3? If I understood correctly, the new 997 also carry 3.6L engines, albiet a more powerful one. Also, which models carry/used to carry the 3.4L? |
Currently the only available Porsche with a 3.8 is the new 997 "S"
The Carrera Cup cars and GT3RSR's all have a engine based on the aircooled 993 engine case (with water cooled cylinders and heads... ala 962/959) These engines dont share the same bell housing bolt pattern with the 986/996 engines (we cant use them easily in the 986/996. B |
Group buy? I am interested, though I haven't had a chance to give those guys a call. Been down here in Alabama on temporary duty, so haven't had the chance to sit down and get serious with these guys.
Stryke, did you do it? If so, what can you tell us? If not, what can you tell us anyway? |

I presume the Oct 09 rendevou for driving to Santa Cruz (3.4L replacement demonstration) from Srouds parking lot at 9 am is still on? If so, I would very much like to join |
Still on. Tim said he will put the car on a lift. The owner also has a twin turbo with 550 hp and Tim said it will be there as well.

I just bought an 01 S with the techart package (exhaust, pre-cat delete, chip, throttle body, intake)...I'd driven a number of boxster prior to this one, and the difference was huge. I'd highly recommend it. receipts show a cost of approx $7k installed.

Techart, eh? Any chance you'll get that baby on the rollers and dyno it? I'd love to see what happened...

no dyno report other than the butt dyno...
the butt dyno likes the mods, and the car sounds really, really good.
techart claims 45-50hp gain. based on driving a number of these cars, I'd say that's what it feels like. it pulls stronger than my buddy's 996 3.4L. |

And I loooooove community service...
I'd been thinking the same thing (getting a dyno)...and when I do , I'll share the results with everybody.
Point taken on getting confused by a loud exhaust. In the meantime, let me assure you that this full techart kit gives you more than an upgraded exhaust sound. |
Fuhrius, did you go through the retailers in California for the parts? As far as I know, they're the only place that sells the techart supplies (at least that advertise that they do). Just curious, thinking about pricing and all that. You know, fueling the hobby of sitting on your computer while you upgrade your car...and then do nothing about it afterwards. :) We'll see, though......I await the numbers.

I didn't do the work myself. I bought this car used , link to pics and mods here: http://www.986forum.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=1664
I do have all the receipts for the work performed and even talked to the shop that did all the work before buying the car. The shop is called German Tech in Florida. I can get you more details if you'd like. The receipts for the engine work total approx $7,500. I also have a techart price list in pdf I can send you. In line with the German Tech receipts, the basic cost breakdown is: Parts - exhaust kit #3 (they have three levels of mod...this being the highest end they do), which includes exhaust system, mild air intake mod, ECU swap, and throttle body swap is about $2,100. - Headers (and pre-cat delete) $1,600 - the German Teach guys claim that this is the key to getting the full bang for the buck - The new side air intake vents / snorkel set up was about $900 including painting - The rest is labor Not sure I could stomach that much $$ for the mods, but the car really is noticeably more fun. The previous owner put a littel over $15k of mods on the car. I was looking for 01 or 02 s's, and figured a nice condition / color 01 with 24k miles could be bought for around 32k (I bought through a licensed / bonded consignment dealer). I paid $37k for this car, so I basically spent $5k for the mods (engine stuff, suspension stuff, nice stereo set up, and k40 laser / radar system). |
