Oil Filter housing and bypass valve

I was helping a friend change his oil in a new Boxster. All went well until he dropped the filter housing and the spring loaded (I assume 'pass valve' popped out). We went over to the local Porche dealer and purchased a new one but I was wondering if that piece can be reused again? Also, for those of you who have changed your own oil, do you insert the filter into the housing and then screw it onto the vehicle or do you first place the filter in place and then screw the housing on? Thanks for you help.

I've had them pop out before and just snapped the valve back into place. As for the filter, I insert it into the filter housing first and then onto the engine.

I stick the filter in the engine then screw in the cannister. I did it the other way with a Wix filter because that filter seated nicely in the bottom cannister. But it does not matter which way you do it.
