Broken Convertible Top Frame

Hey,
A portion of my convertible top frame broke. It's a big part and no one seems to want to sell me just the part. I'll attach a few pics. Did anyone have the same thing if so how did you fix it (get a new one)? I think the part number is 986 561 338 01 if I'm not mistaken.

Thanks in advance..

Don't lie it didn't break. You broke it so you can put a nice new 03-04 top frame with glass top...

You have checked Porsche dealers?

And the Porsche dismantelers listed on Mike Focke's site?

Have u tried to take it to a muffler shop to have them weld the peice back on... they can lay a fat bead around it also to make it extra sturdy.

Probably cost u 10 bucks

yeah I did... a few ppl tried welding it and it broke every time..

What I see is that the mounting lug for the male joint that goes into the red plastic female joint has broken off from the frame.

This is the 3rd car I know of this has happened to over the years. I do not know if the other owners were able to come up with an inexpensive solution.

The frame is made of magnesium, but I think you can weld magnesium. If you have the piece that broke off have you tried to see if it can be welded back on?

Did they sand it down before welding???? the surface area needs to be paint free where the weld is making contact, also they need to coat the peice with weld, like a large scab healing over the wound. Did they do that?

not sure if they did or not.. i gave them the part they gave it back.. I got all money back from all of them so no biggie.. no money lost yet.. I'm going threw -scrap yards to see if anyone's got a 97-01 that I can grab that part of... time will tell...

I'm really surprised the weld broke. Did you take it to a professional welder? If so, what did he use as filler rod? Not sure if it's magnesium or aluminum, but if it's mag. the person welding should have some experience with it under his belt...
