Movement/play in Shifter

How much play is allowable in a stock shifter setup, Currently i have nearly a half inch of play (side to side) in my shifter. Is that too much play?

Stop playing with your shifter. You'll go blind.

Measured where--at the very tip of the shift knob? At the base? What shift knob? Half-inch of play to each side or total from side to side?

With some assumptions about what you really meant to ask, I can say that you're not describing a lot of play. Considering this is a cable actuation setup, I wouldn't stress about it.

I measure from the tip of the shift knob, i have the 2-tone silver ball type porsche shift knob. Its half an inch of total play in neutral and about 2/3rds that amount of play while in gear. Would you say that is still within spec.

I was wondering cause i was getting frequent 2nd gear grinding UNTIL i decided to hold the shifter firmly to the left as i shift into 2nd rather than semi-firmly and i thought that might be an indication of slack in the lines or play in the shifter assembly.
