Talking Top in for repair.

I recently inherited a 98 Boxer and a few days ago the Top stopped working. When I push the button to move the top up or down there is a loud pop noise. I took it to a shop and they have been looking at it for a couple of days. They indicated that a cable broke and a couple of cables needed replacing. Now they tell me that both top transmissions need replacing. This is getting pretty expensive. Has anyone experienced similar problems with the 97 - 99. Any advice or help would be appreciated.
