RMS,IMS Valve cover seals cost
Just got baptized with my 01 boxster. Need to have above seals replaced. Received estimate from local foreign car specialist who works on Porsche for $1300. Dealer nearby wanted $2400. Local dude also throwing in alot of extras like plugs, serpentine since the engine is coming out. Does this sound like a good deal?

Why is the engine coming out? The RMS and IMS can be done with the engine in, and given the amount of clearance around the valve covers, I assume the valve cover gaskets can be done with the engine in as well. The serpentine belt is a piece of cake with the engine installed.
The RMS retails for $16.36 (99710121200), the IMS for $3.92 (99610511201), and I can't find the valve cover gasket seal. Maybe it only uses a liquid gasket compound??? If my above part numbers don't match what the stealership provides, the prices could be a little off. Also, please remember there's quite a bit of labor involved in each of these. Are both shops going to be epoxying the case bolts when they do the IMS? |
Labor Cost for RMS
Just had my RMS leak fixed under warranty at Danbury Porsche. 35k on the car when I bought it last Dec. It took 13 hrs. to fix because I have a TIP. If I had standard it would supposedly take only 6 hrs. to fix. The shop rate is $120 an hr. Am I glad now that I bought the Certified '02 with the warranty!
