Ducati Case for Gilles

Alrighty folks:
Another thread about engine cases that are worthless led us to talking about fun stuff like this, and Gilles asked for photos..... :-)

This is a case-half from a 90's Ducati 2-valve, air-cooled 900cc twin. a "Desmo-Due". This particular one was in a Monster that I built into a track toy.

You'll see, if you look closely, why this one was taken out of service, haha.

We balanced the motor as closely as any I've ever done. Then add to that the port-work and header-work, combined with 41FCR's, and yeah... it'd rev to the moon. Well, it'd rev to 11,500 RPM (that's 2k higher than Ducati intended). But if you revved it to 12k.... POP! yup. that's what caused this. I was teaching a class at Spring Mountain when it popped. so darn it if Ducati didn't have to loan me a 748RS for the rest of the week.

Nope. Look at the photos, and you'll see the crack running horizontally, all the way across the case-half, around 1"-1-1/2" from the top.

yup... that'll do it.... every time, hahaha.
