Enginge noise upon start up

I am a first time Boxster owner with a 1998 2.5 liter Tiptronic with 58K miles. Upon start-up there is a loud "screetching" sound that lasts about five seconds then dissappears. There are no "warning lights" on display. Any diagnostic thoughts would be helpful. I will be taking it in for 60K maintenance this week.
THANKS

Is it the sound of a starter not disengaging? You can find videos of that all over the place to compare.

If it's really 5 seconds, it's very likely the belt squealing, though this is uncommon with serpentine type belts, in my experience.
I'd agree with the starter sound, other than duration. 5 seconds of a stuck starter is gonna burn up that starter in a real hurry.
