Just bought my first Porsche - helllllo

Hi all,

So i came back home yesterday with a brand new (to me) 2002 Boxster 986.2. Very pleased as it seems to be in good condition.

Not sure how long i'm going to have it for as it was meant to be a temporary purchase whilst waiting for my lease car to get a build date... but i'm half tempted to cancel the lease :)

Hi all.. I'm sure you'll be seeing a bunch of posts by me over the coming weeks .. i've already posted a couple of things (key remote and knocking noise) so the car, annoyingly (since everything was fine on test drive) has some bits and bobs which could do with fixing.

Welcome to the forum. Beautiful car there. Seal Grey with Carrera Light wheels (my personal fave) and its a 986S. If it is a 2002 then it is still a 986.1. The 986.2 ran for 2003 and 2004. 986.1 from 1997 to 2002. All the same great looking car. And I saw in another post your key issues. Welcome to the club, key fobs seem to be a consistent issue with Porsches of this era including mine. One works 100% the other 100% NOT. Red light blinks but no joy.

Enjoy your car and drive it like you stole it.

Enjoy your car. Hoping the knocking noise is in the suspension and not the engine. The trailing arms have a tendency to give a thumping noise when you hit a bump they could be a place to start looking.

I think it is a facelift. It has glovebox, glass back window, electric buttons to open the trunks and the cup holders at top of center console. All of which I thought were 986.2 ...is that not the case?

Every thing on your list comes on the 2002, but not the glass rear window. As noted by Paul before, only the 2003 and 2004 are the second edition. Glove box was available 2002 up. Beverage holder slot 2001 up. Trunk switches were available as early as 2001 and up.

986.2 had 3 chain motor, heavier axles, more HP, rear bumper aero slots, sport exhaust tips or oval tip on non S, clear headlights, glass top window. and others.

You had me a little worried so I just checked service book and the little sticker with codes on it and it has an engine code of m9624-673 so om assuming that tallies up with
"2003–2004 3179 cc 260 PS (191 kW; 256 bhp) 310 N⋅m (230 lbf⋅ft) water-cooled DOHC 24-valve boxer flat-six (VarioCam) "M96.24" (Boxster S)"

So who knows what the deal is as my car "appears" to go against the norm. Is there any other concrete way of telling ?

Just put vin into stuttcars and says its my2003. Phew. Wasnt miss sold it :-)
Delivery date for car was apparently 09/11/02 so would have presumably been built in October? But still my2003.
The plot thickens

Yeah knocking seems to be suspension not engine. Dont know if its anything I can fix myself or not .. prob not

Also getting a tinny rattle on idle now too ..had a look underneath and it seems to be some metal cover that's around some pipe related to the exhaust that's vibrating...I prodded it with a stick and it stopped making the noise .

Wonder if it was registered wrong M9624673 is a 2003 motor. Or a 2003 model delivered in 2002. The 10th number in the serial number is what denote the model year.

I guess I opened up a can of interesting worms for you Mr Gibbon! It sure appears you have a 2003. Overall not a bad thing. I love my 03 S.

thefunkygibbon 05-12-2019 08:06 AM

Lol. Ok well I dont really want to dig any further. It came up ok in a HPI check and it seems to be a facelift which is what I wanted and expected it to be, so that's good enough for me. :-)
