Buying from a Porsche dealer - discounts?
 

Is there any rule of thumb regarding the amount a dealer will discount a car?

I am a horrible negeoiator and never know where to start.

If you are buying new -- the MSRP is your starting point-- Is 15% to much?


If you are buying used, there is the asking price, but should an offer be based on anything other source (like KBB retail?)

Anyone willing to give their 2 cents??

I just ordered a 2007 Boxster S w/following options:
-Crest on wheels
-Auto dim mirrors/auto sense wipers
-Bose system
-CD changer
-Power seats

-painted roll bar

MSRP is about $70000. Invoice about $61500. Paid $65000

There is approximately 13% difference between MSRP and Invoice. I think you will be doing good (especially for a Porsche) if you can get the vehicle for 4-7% above invoice.

Just scan Ebay and AutoTrader and you'll get a feeling for the market in whatever you are looking for. You should be getting very good deals (sub $50k) on a brand new 06 S in stock. If you are ordering it's a different matter, and the couple of inputs already posted seem reasonable. Good luck and let us know.

If you buy new, I think you can get about 10% off if you can negotiate well. When I did a factory order last year, I got 9% off on a car with an MSRP of $66.7K.

If you are buying a new "hold-over" from the previous year (a 2006 in 2007 for example) I think you can get 13-14% off. Maybe even 15% off if the dealership is really-really motivated.

If you're buying new, check around at a number iof dealers.

Porsche has been giving some very nice incentives as they clear out remaining 2006 models, at least here in CT. I mean, they're selling like a few thousand dollars above invoice, which is awesome!

Used is tougher to figure out. I bought a 2002 Boxsrer earlier this year. Dealer was asking 32k and I got about 1200 knocked off, but I feel like I could have done better. I wanted the Certified preowned, which is why I went with the dealer. You can do much better, I mean thousands cheaper, if you buy from an independant seller, but buyer beware if you get a lemon. :ah:

I'm buying tomorrow an '06 with few options. Lists at $47, my price $39,500. Incredible that I can buy a 987 for under $40K. That's 15% off MSRP and on a base car too. Surprised the dealer had that much room to move.

Perfect deal at a perfect time. This is an equivalent of the sub $50k S deals I was talking about, but this one's even better on a % basis. Congrats and do post pics.

Lets say you 've got 2 identical 2006 Porsche Boxster's (non-s), one brand new and another with 4,000 miles on it at the same dealership. Should you expect to get the brand new car cheaper than the used becuase they want that new car off their lot? Should you expect to try to get that used price down to more than 15% off its original MSRP? Becuase these identical cars MSRP around $48K-$49K and we are hearing deals where they are getting them at $40K or less. But that same car used with 4K miles will be listed at around $44K and I assume, you wouldnt be able to talk them down $6K would you???

Also, from the previous post, is there ever a Boxster S that's MSRP is under $50K? I dont ever think I've seen one here in the Chicago area.

There's no way they will sell a 4k miles Box for $4k under MSRP when new ones are being discounted way more. Just consider the $44k as a new MSRP for that car -- same as $48k is the msrp for a new one. Both WAY overblown, especially in winter for a last year's convertible.

Watch out for demo cars, especially with 4k miles on them. Personally, I wouldn't touch a car that has had about 1000 people doing to it what I do on my test drives.

dbth is right. Lowest msrp for an 06 987S is $54.5k (no options). For 07 that's above $55k.

Finally, just email/fax the dealers in your area and ask them for quotes on cars that they have in stock and that are close to what you are interested in. You'll learn a lot from just that exercise. The best way to get a feel for a market is to get into it and ask all players for their best offers -- making them aware that they're all in this together. Dealers have all sorts of reasons to be more aggressive than the competition, so take advantage of that.

I ordered an '07 Boxster that stickered for around $49700, not including destination - I was able to negotiate a $4K discount off of that.
