986 vs 987
The good people of this board have chimed in and given me some very good food for thought.... Perhaps, considering all other factors, this wise decision is not to "shoot my wad " on a new car----and venture into the previously owned world.....

I would like your opinions....

Do you think there is big difference between the 986 and 987's with regards to the way they drive and handle?

I've driven a low miles 2004 S 6 speed and a brand spanking new 2006 S Tip----

Both were extremely clean and both were a helluva lot of fun to drive.

Anyone else have a view????

Hey Rondog,

I was actually intent on buying a '03 or '04 S, until I drove the '05. I liked it so much more that I opted for a base '05 over a '03 or '04 S. Of course my Base '05 has the sports package consisting of a 6 SP trans and PASM (Porsche Active Suspension Management) available as an option starting in '05, it changes the damper control map and lowers the car 10mm. This along with 19" carrera classic wheels make it handle unbelievably. There were a lot of changes in '05 that really made a difference to me. Including the new look, both exterior and interior. Also maintenance is now every 20K.
I know it doesn't have the power of an S, but with the increased HP and torque in 2005 along with the 6sp trans. I can keep up with a '04 S. Anyhow, thatís my opinion. I'm sure there are lots of folks out there that would prefer a '04 S over my '05 any day.

Here are a couple of links about the 2005 Boxster:

Hope this helps and good luck

I would echo Smith's comments that a 987 base won't have trouble keeping up with a 986S, so you may want to consider that route. As far as the 987 vs. 986 I think in your heart, you already know the answer to that one.

Although it's become popular for people to recommend the '05 used, as an alternative to the '06, in actuality their numbers are dwindling. Checking pre-owned inventory on Porsche dealer lots within 100 miles of you, there's only 1 - 05 987S Tip (at Beverly Hills Porsche). There is an 06 987S ("used" with 603 miles) at Walter's.

I picked up my new 987 as an alternative to a used 911 in the same price range. I am very happy with the car - very happy with the car.

My '05 was a leftover sitting next to some '06s. They even had a couple of leftover '04s. I was immediately drawn to the '04s thinking I could get a deal, but I prefered the '05 enough that it made a material difference. To me, the upgraded interior was the thing that really clenched it. Much more room. Much more comfortable to me.

Still though, whichever car you end up buying will be a source of great enjoyment for you. I don't think there is a wrong decision here. IT'S A PORSCHE!!!
