Real World Miles Per Gallon
Hello!
I am doing some research on the 2000-2004 Boxster, as my next car. I have read what the specs say about mpg and was wondering if I could get some real world input. Currently I drive a 96 Firebird 3.8V6 and I am able to get about 22mpg on a 60 mile round trip daily from Los Angeles to Orange County. From the numbers, Should I expect the same type of mpg from a Boxster? Does the S really that more fuel thirsty over the other? Thanks |
I have a 2000 986 S as a daily driver and I don't drive "fuel consciously", and rarely get into 6th gear. I get around 18-20 mpg city/suburb environment.
On long trips on the interstate I manage ~28-29mpg. |
Well, driving in a spirited fashion with my '06 2.7 I average 21.5 MPG on my commute with 60-70% being on back roads. On the interstate @75 MPH the OBC reads 29 MPG.

Gentle highway= 30mpg
Average mixed driving= 22mpg On the track= 15mpg |
I typically get 21-23 mpg in my 2000S. I mostly drive "spiritedly".
|
21 mixed. I drive it hard.
|
In my 2.5 I get about 18 around town and get this... 8 mpg at the track!
However, on the road on long trips with the cruise set at 70, I get 27 mpg. |
Thanks everyone. This is really encouraging.

My 2000 S averages 20 mpg in mixed use -- 60-70% back roads/in town, 30-40% highway. All quite spirited... it is a Porsche after all.
I've never taken it on a long highway trip, so I can't give a scientific # for pure highway. Based on my average, however, I think it achieves around 25 mpg at reasonable speeds. What I find surprising is my 1986 Carrera 3.2 achieved slightly better mpg on my commute -- in the 21 to 22 range. It was smaller, lighter, less powerful, and had narrower tires (in back) which probably explains the difference. Then there is my commuting appliance -- civic hybrid -- average 42 mpg, but ideal weather (60's, dry, no wind) mpg is in the low 50's. |
Spirited driving:
2006 Boxster S.......about 22MPG 1997 911 Turbo......about 16MPG (that's why back in 1997 the first owner had to pay a $4,500 gas guzzler tax!) |
01 S
17.2 average. I have fun! |
This is another situation covered by the saying, "Read the fine print." The fine print says, in essence, actual mileage may vary depending on a whole lot of things.TrueDelta's Gas Mileage Survey (formerly the Fuel Economy Survey) is the only one to ask car owners about driving style, terrain, A/C use, driving speed, and other factors that can affect actual gas mileage.
