What is this center console wire for?
Removed the center console on a 98 Boxster to replace the dash and carpet. Did a fair job of labeling and bagging, but can't recall this wire, or find it in Bentley, etc. It comes down from just to the left of center of the dash and drops down to the airbag control computer. I suppose if there were something in the lower two cubby bins, this wire could hook into that, but on this 98, those spaces had only bins.
BTW, in an earlier thread I asked how many interior trim levels there were, many thinking two, leather and leatherette. This trim looks more like fake pigskin. It is rougher than either leather or leatherette and looks nothing like those options.
Anyone know what this wire is for?

That wire is for a factory option cell phone system. It has constant and switched 12 volt power. Many have used it to hard wire radar detectors.

I believe it was for a phone attachment. It is a good source for 12v if I remember correctly.

It is the phone connector. It is supposed to be loose in there, and very helpful for hardwiring a radar detector as mentioned, or phone charger, etc.
Red/Green - 12V Constant
Green/Black - 12V Switched
Brown - Ground
Yellow/Black - Phone Mute

To the best of my knowledge, heated seat wiring is not in there if you don't have heated seats. I bought a set of seats from an '03, which happened to be heated, but if I want them to work I will have to get the wiring and switches and install it all. As this is a car for warm sunny days I probably won't bother going to the time and expense of doing it.

A Boxster owner named Denis Vogel wrote a great DIY for installing seat heaters. Unfortunately, it is no longer available on the web.
You can check my post here: http://986forum.com/forums/general-discussions/49826-seat-heater-install-seat-leather-swap.html
For a link to a picture of my car while I was doing my installation. It is a lengthy process
