Chain Tensioner Replacement

Here's the first detailed chain tensioner replacement video I'm aware of. After driving for a week it has definitely helped to eliminate the dreaded chain rattle on startup. Unfortunately I waited too long to do it and will need to replace the chain rails as well. That will be the next major project. But for now...

Another great vid! Thanks.

Other than requiring some patience... that is a nice DIY.

I thought there were three (3) tensioners. No?

Yes there are 3. Check out my previous video for more background/details.

Thanks for making this! I'm looking forward to the chain guide video.

there is another tensioner on top next to the AC compressor. It may be part of the issue also,.? Frank

Yes, I talked about that one in the first video.

Thank you for taking the time to share your mechanical adventures and help the rest of us determine if we want to follow you down a particular path.

Did you measured the cam deviations before / after the tensioner change?

Do you know which chain guide components you are going to be replacing? I started hearing chain noise a couple of months ago and stopped driving the car. I decided I wanted a lift to make the job easier since there was a high probability I would be pulling the engine, and I see myself using it hopefully for many years in the future. My cam deviations on bank 2 are off a bit more than 9 degrees. My hope is to replace the actuator guides and not have to split the block. But I figure I'm going to learn a lot once I get the process started. I get back from vacation this week, there was some delays on the lift I ordered because it was a brand new model from Stratus but I think it should be in my garage in the next week and a half and I'm going to get started.

Do you know how far deep your project's going? Are you attempting with the engine in and are you only doing the actuator guides or tearing everything apart?

I'm not sure if the guides I need to replace are the "actuator guides" or not, but I'm told they can be reached by removing the cam cover without needing to take the engine out. I'm also waiting until I get my lift haha. Moving into the new house this coming weekend and then will order the lift, so I'm probably 3-4 weeks out.

They can be done with the engine in the car, I did it...but it caused a lot of cursing.
