Boxster trailer hitch
 

So I decided to go for it an make a hitch for my beloved Boxster. Funny how you get a little more risky and creative after a few scratches and 20 years of good service. Taking a Dremell to the bumper cover is not so scary. Watch this thread and I’ll give step by step photos and directions. I can not post phots from my mobile device on this forum.

I'd love to see a Boxter pulling a big old Airstream trailer up into the mountains!

Once saw one used for a delivery vehicle, which I thought was insane, but I've never seen one pulling anything behind.

The first decision you have to make is what kind of hitch you want. there are basically 2 options; 1) Receiver type or 2) simple trailer ball. The advantage of the receiver type is that you can switch the trailer hook up for a bike rack or other kind of rack with ease. I wanted the versatility of being able to tow my trailer or put on the bike rack. If you are not sure what I am talking about google "receiver type bike rack"

Trailer selection will be the next decision to make. This will depend on you intended use. I wanted a trailed that I could 1) load up extra gear for camping or travel. My wife and I are both 71 years old and now we have a little more time to do some of these things. I also track my car occasionally so I wanted to be able to haul track tires and a nice toolbox as well as track day incidentals. I was able to find the perfect trailer on FaceBook marketplace for $250.00. It is very light (less than 300 pounds), and has a removable luggage bubble. Next I began to prepare the trailer. I removed the cooler and the luggage bubble. I scraped, sanded and primed the trailer for a new coat to paint.

By the way, when mentioning the type of hitch previously I forgot to mention that I Really like Maytag's hitch (see his post). The only problem is that you can only use one of those special trailer balls that does not require a pin, as the pin is hidden behind the bumper cover. It would be impossible to find a bike rack that could be used with that type receuver. But otgher than that the hidden part is very nice.

Once you have come this far it is time to start taking things apart. There is a step by step process to remove the rear bumper cover. You must first manually raise the spoiler and remove it. There are a couple of tricks I learned but they are all covered in other posts. (see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zQ99bDEesu4 as an example).

Once the bumper cover is off you can start making your hitch bracket cardboard template. At this point leave the bumper attached to the car. I used 2 pieces of cardboard. 1) 10x5 (not pictured because my welder lost it), This one is mounted flat against the rear face of the bumper. The 2nd piece is 10x6 (pictured).
