My rear speaker install

A pair of JBL 3.5inch mid range speakers with crossovers
Oxygen free mid range speaker cables

Im fortunate enough to run a CNC router machine at work so was able to just write a program for the panels and machined from MDF then a quick coat of satin black car paint. A jigsaw would have been fine to use just make a cardboard template first.

The material for the fronts I found laying around in a cupboard one of those sun protectors that sucker onto a car side window and just cut it up :-)

I wanted to be able to disconnect the cables when I removed the box to access the engine bay so used an old male and female head unit connector and cut of one block leaving me with just the speaker wire blocks. Cut a hole in the side of the box and hot glued it in. With this block connector setup I still have the option of running another set of speakers if I want.

Speaker wires I ran down the passenger side and up behind the dash into the head unit.

Sound is great, makes a huge difference to have some mid-range from all around in the car, was definitely a great well worth project.

That's a very clean install for a DIY!

Did you ever consider using 4 speakers like the OEM kit or two rectangular speakers? How's the sound with just two? I find the rear speakers help "fill out" the sound in the 986. It's too bad you can't get the OEM kit for $130 anymore.

I originally considered 4 three inch like the kit but decided as actually you don't need a lot behind you, just something to give it some all round sound and total cost was only 40gbp so about $55. Installing that block connector as I say has given me the option of two more speakers and if I go down that route i'll just re-machine a couple of panels so no biggy but actually listening to it earlier im really happy with it. Adding the crossovers to take out the base was a definite so the low tones are coming from low down in the middle of the car and the mid and tweet from all four corners. Its pretty much a perfect setup for me.

Next job is to definitely replace all the existing speakers with JBL's. I like JBL's as they are made by Harmon. My Range Rover sport had the Harmon kardon system in it and it sounded awesome so chose the JBL route as they are a good price for a decent speaker.

Thank you for the inspiration! I used your wiring harness method and installed two 4 inch speakers flush on top of the deck instead of inside the cubby holes (easier and I had a 4 inch hole saw) and man does it sound better! I have them running off my headunit and it really fills the inside compartment!
