Console cup holder

Trying to figure out how to remove cup holder above climate control. The trim around the ac vent and control on my 2003 Boxster S is one piece. How do you remove this without breaking it?

The outer plastic trim horsehoe piece snaps out. You need to get something behind it at the edges and gently pry it out. But then there is a whole inner plastic structure that also has to come out. When I replace the cupholder on my 2003, I ended up removing the radio and climate control panel and disconnecting all of the wires from the terminals on the backs of the switches on the horseshoe. It was a long time ago, I don't think I did more than I had to, but maybe I did. Here are some pictures from when I did the job.

Be aware that on my 1999, the side panels on the ac trim come off individually, so where the cigarette lights is that piece comes off and the opposite side piece comes off also separately. The image above is all one piece.
