18" Sport Classic II wheel refurbish

Doing a lot of work on the Boxster (clutch, axle, brakes) and I am waiting on parts. so taking the time to refurbish the beat up wheels. decided to try a two tone design. black centers and silver outer rings. also want the bolts to stay silver. seems like the best method is to remove the bolts and separate the wheels into their two pieces.
I have heard lots of conflicting information, everything from "piece of cake, no worries" to "don't reuse the old bolts", to "your wheels are going to fall off, explode and talk bad about your mother".
So the question is, has anyone actual done a rebuild/refinish of 2 part rims? if so, what were the results?
