bummer ignition switch change

Ignition switch starting to give issues on the red car, so i ordered a new one...

So today I had some spare time and first thing I noticed when I removed the air hose...

Different color switch.

Apparently someone in the past had replace the whole ignition switch arm and electrical portion with a updated version. apparently it is clocked differently.

So have to go to the local store to get a more expensive version

Anyone know if this white one is the ones from 2004 up?

Haha! I just replaced my ignition switch yesterday.

I can't help with your question, though. Sorry...
I did find the cause of the failures. Some of them, anyway. The clock spring rubs on one of the position lock tumblers and eventually wears a divot into it, causing it to hang up or not rest in the correct position, throwing the contacts off or causing intermittent contact.
The contacts themselves looked new.

EDIT: according to the interweb, your assumption is correct on the white switch.

LMAO I'm like one day behind you this week.

Well it looks like it is off of a 2004 up Boxster, and is a common part used on VW, Audi, and Porsche. I got it off of O'Reilly for like $40.

Moral of the story... Pull the air duct off and look at the color of the ignition switch before ordering!

I had the exact same thing happen on my 03. From what I was told there was an updated system that Porsche came out with and the prior owner must have had it replaced on a service visit. After 10 minutes on my head I finally realized I had the wrong part.

Same thing happened on my 01. I must have tried for 15 minutes to get the new one in but it was just too big. It wasn't until I put the old one next to the new one I realized the size difference.
