Blankety-blank shift knob
Any thoughts on how to remove this type of shift knob on a 1998? The boot was well worn so I decided to replace it not knowing it was all one piece. I can't find any set screws and it definitely doesn't twist off.http://986forum.com/forums/uploads01...1425167905.jpg

-Drop the top so you don't put your head through the roof.
-Apply heat to the leather shaft of the shifter knob with a hairdryer. Warm it up good. -Tap it a few times to loosen it up. You may have to give it a few good raps. It's gonna be stuck tight. -Straddle the console with a foot on each side. -Pull. Be careful you don't hit yourself in the face when it comes loose. You'll want the top down to prevent damage to you or the car as the momentum from you pulling and the shifter coming loose will throw you backwards. Ask me how I know all this... :o |
Thanks. I'll try it tomorrow. The snow here is a perfect excuse/opportunity to work on it.

Just be careful when pulling up on the shift boot so you don't whack yourself. |
It also may work to use Vice Grips anchored on the shaft and a small pry-bar to lever the knob. -an old Volvo trick.

Thanks Red. It worked just like you said it would and I didn't whack myself in the head. Close but no bruise. I have a heated garage so hopefully no issues lowering the top.
