OBC Hack on a 01S wiring question

I have all my parts, and a question came up in my head. I see the ground wire is from pin 1 of the connector (BMW) to instrument ground. Pins 2 , 3 , 4 and 5 go to the instrument cluster to provide the signal for the different functions. Basicly it is just a toggle. My question to anyone who has done this hack is I never see a wire coming from pin 1 of the OBC 4 stalk assembly going to ground ?

In the Pelican article I see a wire that has been taped over and is shorter than the rest and this goes to ground but it is not in pin 1 of the connector ???

LIke I said I have my harness finished and ready to install but this one point is bugging me...anyone shed any light on the subject ??

THanks
Dwight
