986 front springs

Hi, when out on a drive heard a metallic clunk from front N/S on investigation I see road spring is broken. Happy to do this myself, just looking for any short cuts or advice. Only instructions I have seem to entail removing the whole front suspension, and braking system. Was hoping to just compress spring, then remove strut, is this possible? Any advice more than welcome. Thanks
