grinding noise on start..

I've been getting a grinding noise on start occasionally. it only happens abt. 1 out of 15 times. it sounds like the starter isn't retracting fast enough from the flywheel . has anyone else had this problem??? please help if you can :)

Do a search on pulling / changing your starter. And more car info is helpful to, year, model, miles etc. My starter was bad at 60k. A rebuild on-line cost me $200.

starter noise

I own a 02 base. I too had a starter noise after engine start. I removed the starter cleaned and lube the drive and its been fine since. Good luck.

Hi there!

I had a similar grinding noise from my 99' 2.5 boxster. i found out this weekend that the noise was coming from the water pump pully.

The initial sound was like loose baffles in the exhaust.. at low revs from cold you would hear it. after carrying on with motoring.. the sound turned into a heavy tapping noise and steam! I have a new pump on order after having removed mine yesterday!

Hope this may help you with your noise issue

I had the same thing, just needed to remove the starter motor, dissemble, clean up everything and then lubricate the bendix shaft with grease and Hey presto, quiet starts.
Bit of an ordeal to remove the induction pipework etc but well worth the effort - saves embarassment when the grinding noise occurs in public car parks etc.
All done less than 2 hours.
