CLEANING & LUBRICATING STARTER/SOLENOID
I have my starter out on my 98 Box. Any advice on how to clean/lubricate? What type of lube? How far to dig into it? (separating solenoid from starter looks fairly easy)
Thanks, Ray |
not sure how much to dig into it. BUT, you should use white lithium grease. its also good for lubricating your convertible top mechanisms.
don't forget the beer. |
Beer first! I'll get the grease and take care of the top mechanisms while I'm at it. I've got a lot apart waiting to buy an immobilizer module....appreciate the response!

I would check the contacts for wear. That's the most common problem w/ starter failing, other than that, you shouldn't worry about greasing.

Well, that depends on the starter. I fixed the starter on my wife's RSX when it was hanging up. Grunge & grit ( technical terms! ) was causing the problem. I think I lubed it with some old Moly CV joint grease I had left over??

Sticky starters are a pretty common issue among 986/996.
It usually makes a funny, screeching / whirring noise after the engine fires. I took mine out, cleaned it with brake cleaner and sprayed inside with silicone spray, and have not had issues since.. -Brad |
