Depends on the model year.

Later years the pump is inside the tank so you are looking at big bucks to replace. Since the pump is cooled by the gas in the tank, running it dry is a definite no-no.

I had the exact same symptoms; I replaced my MAF and two O2 sensors, pre cat, and problem solved.
