DIY Instructions - Avic D3 Installation
Initially it was just a show and tell but since we winded up doing a lot of instructions, thought it might make sense to list it in the proper place.

Darn nice instructions!

One change
I recently did this install and I have one suggestion on a change in sequence. Where it is indicated to use the Dremal to remove the center brace...I suggest you wait and first remove the entire factory housing, then use the Dremal once it's on your work bench. Much cleaner than doing it in the car!
|
You're absolutely right
Yes, if I had to do it again, I would of taken out the plastic housing and cut it on a work bench too becos eventually you have to take it out anyways.

Great documentation... nicely done!! I'm in the process of doing it myself but didn't know where to begin. This will definitely help :o .

Well, I finaly got to it and bought the install kit from Ebay and decided to go with the Avic Z2. Did the video bypass, getting a HDD to upgrade my Z2 to the Z3 software (http://www.avic411.com).

Double beep of the horn when locking..
Nice instructions!
I'm in the process of installing a Kenwood double din  (currently waiting for your ebay kit to arrive :) ) Another comment for the notes, when packing it in for the day I found that I couldn't lock the car and got a double beep of the horn each time I tried. After messing about with the grounding wire, durametric diagnostic tool, and such like I eventually realised that the interior lights and power windows had also stopped working. Yes, it turned out that I simply blew the fuse (probably when I was disconnecting all the wires). Think I'll pull the new fuse before I continue the install.. Oh, and what a pita rerouting the climate control wiring from the top to the bottom section was  Still, it looks much better now. Where did everyone place their GPS antenna? I used double sided sticky to affix it to the top of the air vent (just under the dash) but, being as its a short run, there's loads of extra wire that I had to stow and I haven't been able to test the reception yet.. |
GPS Antenna
I ran my GPS antenna wire through the firewall and placed it next to the cabin filter under the plastic shroud that covers the windshield wipers and it works great. I didn't want to put the magnetic part on the hood of the car.
good luck -Steve |
Interesting. That's about where I wanted to place mine but, short of drilling a holes, I couldn't work out how to get the cable through. How did you route yours?
|
there are a few rubber grommets near the steering column that you cut a X with a utility knife and push the cable through. If you crawl up near the pedals you'll see them... Remove the plastic covers next to the batter and you'll also see the grommets from the other side. One of them is behind the battery or just off center of the battery.
Good luck. |
Does anyone have the link to his eBay auctions?
|
Just search for 'boxster double din' and they'll pop right up.
