had my boxster towed tonight

This is my first time writing on here.. I hope I am doing it right..

Anyway, I have 1999 boxster with 46k. Everything seemed to be running great until tonight... I was taking off from a light and I heard a loud clunking sound and it continued as I pulled away. I pulled over and shut car off. I started the car up and it sounds fine.. Rev it up and sounds great.. NOT engine then right? I did not try to engage the clutch. scared to do damage. Had it towed away to dealer..

Does anyone have any idea what is wrong? My clutch has not been slipping at all! Clutch pedal has felt a little odd, but no slipping..

help please...

It could be many things, really. I'm sorry this happened to you. Fear of the unknown is lousy—I've had it many times with my Boxster.

Do come back to this thread and let us know what happened when a proper diagnosis has been made. You've now piqued my interest!

Engine light come on? Did it flash? That's kinda the first sign of something serious.

cardesigner 01-13-2008 08:10 PM

the engine runs. i can start it and it sounds awsome. No engine light comes on at all or any other light.

Might be something as simple as a failed drive axle, they do break in rare cases or the bolts come loose and fall out.

cardesigner 01-13-2008 08:31 PM

would that make a horrible sound when that fails?

wvicary 01-14-2008 04:10 AM

If the axle breaks near the splines for the C/V joint it won't make a sound and will look fine until torque is applied but they sometimes make a little noise if just the bolts fall out.

Sorry to hear about your ride. Good luck with that and keep us posted!

If you do loose a joint, the car wont move when you try to get it going. The noise mine made when the axle went was a loud clicking when you applied load to the transmission. Kind of like a very hard to listen to version of baseball cards in a bicycle wheel spoke. There wouldn't be any strange noise just still.

it wasn't a clicking sound.. loud clunking sound and made the jerk back and forward... I started car and sounds good, but did not put it in gear. I am thinking transmission... maybe?

RandallNeighbour 01-14-2008 07:49 AM

It certainly could be transmission-related. That or e-brake related?

Failed axle drive. Good call wvicary! Yes, on the driver side the bolts were gone and it was just hanging there. Very happy this is all that is wrong :)

How much does this cost?

CJ_Boxster 01-14-2008 09:35 AM

For the bolts, probably less than $50 bucks max for all of them for all of them. Lucky Mofo!

Not sure, call this number "Suncoast Porsche Parts Department" 1-877-923-1700

derb 01-14-2008 10:36 AM

The drive shaft list price is $633 which includes the dust bellows, clips, etc.

RandallNeighbour 01-14-2008 10:54 AM

I'm going to get under my car TONIGHT and inspect those bolts to make sure they're not loose!

Try Sunset Imports, Suncoast can't beat their pricing.

Both are great shops but Sunset is better w/ pricing and the speed of delivery.

For those of us on the east coast, Suncoast in FL may actually be cheaper and quicker, since they are also located here. It takes a while and cost more to ship coast-to-coast.

Sunset is in OR, which would be quicker and cheaper shipping for you.

Did you check for cat remains in the wheelwell?
