DIY" Drive Belt
Drive Belt.
1) Move seats forward and remove carpet from behind seats. http://members.optusnet.com.au/kraco...boxster/12.JPG 2) Undo the nuts and bolts that fix the metal cover to the front of the engine to expose the front of the engine. http://members.optusnet.com.au/kraco...boxster/13.JPG 3) Use a 15/16 wrench and turn clockwise on the adjuster to loosen the belt tension. Simply peel off the belt and be sure to route the new belt the same way. http://members.optusnet.com.au/kraco...boxster/11.JPG 4) Make sure that the new belt is sitting correctly in the grooves before starting engine to test. |
Thanks for the photos and write up!
I did my belt service the other day and it was very EASY to do. The whole procedure, from start to finish, took less than 45 minutes. |
Finally a picture that shows the Cover with the Bolts still visible, i never wanted to remove it cause no one would show a picture of that in there DIY's

Great photos. Thanks. It looks like a very easy diy. I've seen recommendations about sketching the layout of the belt before you remove it, so you don't screw up the routing.
Anyone have any suggestions on when it should be replaced? How many miles are you getting before replacement? I've got 56000 on my 01 and am thinking just for preventitive maintenance I ought to replace it. Is the belt like tires... gets bad just from age? If so, I think I probably need to change it soon. Especially, given the apparent ease of doing so. ok ok... so I'll go look it up in the owners manual. Practical advise would be appreciated though! :) Bob |

When you remove the service cover watch out for the sharp edges.

I highly recommend that any DIYer buy a copy of the Bentley publications Boxster service manual. |

Just changed my belt! Thanks for the DIY! Anyone know how much it usually runs to have a mechanic do this? Just curious as to how much I saved by purchasing a $30 belt and doing it myself.
Thanks!!!! |
well you saved about 1/2 hour charge so what ever the rate is that is how much yoy saved. At my shop it would have saved you $37. Thats gas money

Good DYI post, thanks.

how tight should the belt be
mentions loosening the tension to remove the belt, but how tight should it be to operate? cheers |
The tensioner is spring loaded and self adjusting.
