WTB - Boxster S - under 125k miles - $8k-$9k

Hey guys,

I am new to this site, but not new to Porsches. I had a 1999 996 that I sold a few years back, and prior to that a 944 turbo. Miss having a Porsche!!! Looking to get into a 986 S.

Anybody looking to sell their 2000-2002 Boxster S in the Northeast area of the US? I'm in NJ.

I'm not real picky with exterior/interior colors, or whether its a manual or tip. High mileage is fine as well. I actually prefer a car with 80 to 125k miles on it.

Only requirement is that I want a clean car from some who maintained it well, someone like the guys that frequent this board.

I' skeptical to buy off craigslist, and besides there are a bunch of base models on craigslist, but I don't see many Boxster S's that caught my attention.

Let me know if anyone is looking to sell now or in the near future. Cheers guys

Thanks,
Cody

In that price range it may be hard to find a well maintained Boxster S. If your willing to look at base model, this looks to be a good deal, and not far from your neck of the woods. Not an S, but its got the 2.7l, new clutch.

Porsche Boxster 2001 Looks/Runs Great! 118k Original Miles! Clean Titl

Not necessarily true. My 2000S generated no real interest last November at $8,800. It's very well maintained and has been trouble free for my almost 8 years of ownership.

They're out there. One of my neighbors bought an 03 base with 137k miles, PSS9's, sport seats, 18", Lapis/beige. $5,900.

Happy hunting!

thanks guys! yea I rather buy the S model. For a few grand more, I can get a much faster car, and better brakes, ect.

That would be a candidate that would fit the bill.....

Needs a little love but asking price is not bad...not a steal but certainly realistic.

Clutch swap but no mention of IMS, RMS R/R.

JohnH123 05-17-2016 04:09 AM

Yes that's a decent example with documentation of maintenance and recent clutch, brakes, aos. I wouldn't pay more than 8k if the IMS wasn't done.

codys1127 05-19-2016 10:18 AM

thanks, yes i plan to take a look at this one this weekend.

codys1127 05-19-2016 10:53 AM

What would be a good offer price for this 2002 Boxster S? I'll know more about it on the weekend but looks to have some scratches and such, but the guy said it was mechanically sound.

tada 05-19-2016 11:11 AM

If the IMS has not been replaced, I'd offer 7500-8500. Start low and bargain up. Look for problems like the scuff and use it in your bargaining.

This looks to be a decent example - 50k miles - https://newjersey.craigslist.org/cto/5603239881.html

I wasn't aware they made the S model in 1999.

That car in the ad was manufactured in November 1999 and I expect that it is a 2000 model actually.
Here's a clip of a picture in the ad:

Also, the owner is not likely very detail oriented and may not know a lot about these cars. "Porch":

I have seen plenty of Non-S Boxsters that had 'S' badges added and other items swapped over. I had an S style bumper on one of my '99s and have a trunk lid on a 99 that was originally from an S and is now de-badged. Before you go look at a car that is suspect, GET THE VIN and check it. An S model VIN starts with: WP0CB... , Base model starts with WP0CA.
I bought a 2000 S that was in need of some work and discovered it had a 1997 2.5L engine in it rather than a 3.2.
Caveat emptor.

thanks for info, much appreciated. When you say check the VIN, you mean just run it through carfax?

dghii 05-26-2016 09:57 AM

Not carfax...search this site for Porsche VIN decoder.

What dghii said.

Carfax and others will often miss important issues.

That said, when I am on a serious search for a car or plan to buy a few, I will get a month of 'Autocheck' just to get what info is available. I don't see the value in buying a single report. Not to recommend one above the other and it looks like price and terms have changed since I last used it:

here's a 2000 S in Northern NJ with either 130,000 or 1,300,000 miles that hasn't run in a year for $6,500 or best offer.

My bad, it's also listed here, sorry!

Slim pickings on this thread. The black one looks terrible with those aftermarket wheels.

codys1127 06-05-2016 09:03 AM

Thanks, there a 2004 S in my area that I will look at 2004 Porsche Boxster S, not a bad price.

dghii 06-05-2016 12:30 PM

Certainly worth a look but once again, up for consideration as one of the worst CL ads ever.

"car has beige top"
"Car has no codes or scheduled maintenance"
Terrible pics.... No interior shots at all.

Tread lightly and assume you will learn nothing of value from owner.
