2001 Boxster S for Sale

2001 Boxster S. Asking price is $9,500. The mileage is currently just over 191,000 miles. Only 4,000 miles on rebuilt engine - more on that below. I have owned the car since January of 2011 and driven it 100,000 miles since then. It has been my daily driver except for the last few months when my wife has been driving it more than me. This car is my first P-car, so I am sentimentally attached to it and don’t really want to let it go, but four P-cars is too many to maintain at the same time. I did all maintenance on the car and as such I have every record since I purchased the car at 91,000 miles.

At 187,000 miles, the chain ramps inside the motor started deteriorating badly, so I pulled and rebuilt the motor. To see the technical details and many pictures from the rebuild, please refer to this link: 2001 Boxster S Engine (M96/21) Rebuild - Dorkiphus.net

The highlights from the motor rebuild at 187,726 are:
  • Full disassembly and cleaning of all internal components
  • Replaced all crankshaft and rod bearings
  • Replaced all chains
  • Replaced all chain tensioners
  • Replaced all chain ramps (inside case and on VarioCam units)
  • Replaced oil pump drive
  • Replaced IMS bearing with Pelican Parts IMS kit
  • Replaced crankshaft bearing carrier bolts
  • Replaced rod bolts with updated 997 PN
  • Replaced every single gasket and O-ring on the motor
  • New NGK spark plugs

Other recent maintenance items include:
  • Rebuilding the drive axles with new CV boots and high-temp Redline grease at 187,726 miles
  • New air/oil separator (AOS) at 183,702 miles
  • New transmission fluid at 183,702 miles (Redline 75W90 NS)
  • New rear Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires at 178,307 miles
  • New StopTech Street Performance brake pads all around at 177,998 miles
  • New engine mount at 174,291 miles
  • All injectors were professionally cleaned and calibrated at 134,621 miles

Some upgrades I’ve made to the car over the years:
  • 997/987 stock shifter console – much more precise than 996/986 unit
  • Porsche Litronics – OE integration via Porsche retrofit kit
  • PSS9 suspension – this was an early upgrade, so the suspension now has 84,000 miles on it
  • RSS toe links were installed in the rear to facilitate a proper alignment after lowering the car
  • Replaced entire sound system. Added rear speakers in a 987 Bose speaker housing. The sound system sounds great compared to a stock Porsche Bose setup. The head unit is a Blaupunkt Acapulco MP54, which is pretty classy, clean, and has a simple interface. The Blaupunkt also features two AUX inputs for integration with your phone and satellite radio.
  • Installed 987 seats

The good:
  • Motor runs very well and is very strong per the money and effort recently invested in the rebuild
  • Interior is very clean for a car this age. If you are familiar with 986s you know that the interior trim is very easily damaged and the rubberized paint on many surfaces flakes away. Mine is in great shape as I have replaced many pieces that were damaged prior to my ownership. The Porsche painted center console adds a nice touch.
  • AC runs cold
  • The original Porsche Sport Exhaust (PSE) adds a nice note to the exhaust
  • The Porsche clear tail lights and smoked front side lights add a bit of euro Porsche flair as well
  • I just performed the VA emissions inspection and the car is good to go for the next two years
  • VA state inspection valid until March 2016, so again good to go

The bad:
  • The exterior does show some signs of 190,000 miles worth of Virginia roads. The front bumper in particular has quite a bit of road rash with the clear coat and paint flaking in many areas (as shown in the photos). The hood has several large stone chips that should be touched up at least with a factory paint pen. The rest of the paint is in pretty good condition considering the age of the car.
  • The suspension also shows some signs of ageing. I replaced many of the LCAs, sway bar bushings, and drop links over the years, but I would refresh the car a bit for track duty in particular. It may not be much of a concern on the street.

The car is being offered with the Porsche Litronic headlights and 987 seats at this price. I can swap back to the original halogen lights and 986 seats and would be willing to negotiate on the price as such.

Please PM if you are interested in the car. Thanks for looking!

This seems like a *great* deal. I'm trying to drum up interest on a couple of other forums for you...
