WTB Boxster S w/bad motor or no motor
 

I'm looking for a Boxster S with a bad motor for a conversion project.

My 2001 Boxster S just blew a crank bearing at the track this week. Unfortunately, I'm in So Cal, so it's probably like $1k just to ship. (Anybody know a good shipping company?) But, in case you haven't found anything you like locally... I am considering selling her instead of finding a used engine if I could get something in the neighborhood of $4k to $7k for it. I'm trolling ads for used engines this week; maybe I'll post in the for sale section after that. 62k miles, bright & shiny paint minus a few smudges & scratches, mild patina on the interior, new brake pads but old rotors, plastic window creased but mostly clear, no canvas rips, trunks' carpets perfect.

Any oil mods to your car

I track a Boxster S, so I'm always concerned to see an engine go

You mean like a deep sump kit to help stave off oil starvation? Nope - all stock. I suppose I could have been looking for the oil light more often and might have seen something ahead of time, but even on the straights I was busy talking to my student.

My takeaway from this is that if you have an engine which you know (as I should have) has a potential oil starvation issue, you should really have an oil pressure gauge like the 996, and maybe even an audible alarm. My 914 has a bright green oil pressure warning light that's located where the color green has absolutely no business showing up, so it immediately catches my attention. The fact that a Boxster has a little red light at the bottom of the dash for something so important is as much a design flaw as the oil pickup issue. Anyway, I prefer to think of this as proof that I am simply better at driving fast around the track than Porsche's test drivers. :D

It is odd I was able to do this on street tires. Is it possible for an IMS bearing failure to cause an oil pressure drop, and make a "Clackity clackity clackity" sound very regularly? Seems more like a connecting rod bearing, to me and to the shop.

Your oil got too hot, oil pressure dropped, a loss of film strength occurred. Then boom. I see this about 50 times per year.

Starvation can occur from things other than G forces, in fact, G forces are not the root of the issue.

to the OP, I have a 2005 Boxster with a broken engine that I don;t have time to resurrect. 61K miles, it only has a broken heart.

This is why I put in a temp gauge and a oil pressure gauge.

I already have a small deep sump and oil baffle.

I'm convinced keeping the oil cool is a big part of the battle. I do run Amsoil racing oil now. Not cheap, but holds up well in our ChumpCar
which gets totally abused. 24 hour races in 105 degree temps. But I have to believe the external oil cooler is a big help too.

I'm trying to decide if I add an external oil cooler to the Boxster -- and if I do, how and where.

I think it might become my Xmas present to myself (mostly because I will have time to install it and there are no events at that time of the year).

If the OP doesn't show interest in your 2001 S, with what you have said in the posting, I can bid you $5000. Your estimate for freight is about right, so I have to take that into account. The good news is that Boxsters are still a little rare around here compared to the flood of used Boxsters in SoCal, so my bid should be very competitive.

I've bought other Boxsters, even from here on the board. This is a real bid.

I suppose I should add, in the event that last message was meant for someone else, that my bid is not a free put option that stays open indefinitely while searching for another bid. If you want to sell, that bid is good today. If you want to wait, that is certainly your right and I respect that, but then you will need to respect that if you later come back to me, that bid may OR may not still be there. My bid is not indefinite, it has a time limit.

Yup, no response from the OP, at this point you are top on my list and I'm hoping to get photos to you tomorrow night. Your main competition is simply my love for Speed Yellow, which is apparently rather rare & I hate to see her go. I'll respond to your email this afternoon too.

I have a 1999 Porsche Boxster base 2.5L roller for sale . It has experienced an IMS failure and is in need of a replacement engine.

The car is in great shape otherwise. Some highlights: 17 inch turbo wheels with Michelin Pilot Sport tires; Gray leather interior; 6-CD changer and amplifier; The paint job is great with some minor usual nicks from normal use;

This is a project car that needs an engine replacement, but otherwise could be a great car for racing or fun weekend cruising.
